i am really unsure how to react when i see work very similar to mine being produced by people who i consider friends. a part of me is deeply flattered, but another part of me is saddened and pissed off.
i certainly realize that unless you live in a cultural vacuum (and NONE of us do, despite what you may say about phoenix), all artwork is derivative. i certainly have other friends that i feed off of and are inspired by, as do we all. another thing i've always realized (and this should be obvious) that if you want to show respect for someone, don't fucking copy their work. and if you do, don't hang it on a gallery wall with a price tag on it. sure, people are going to do it anyway, and there's not much i can do to stop it. but from my perspective it's not acceptable, no matter how you try to justify it in your head.
i have always been fairly open about my methods and locations, with the idea that what i'm doing isn't totally exclusive to me and my style. if someone is going to use my techniques, i figure they will put a little effort into creating their own spin on things - but recent experiences have taught me that this is not such a good idea of going about it. i always try to help people out whenever possible, ask anyone that knows me well. and when i see them just blatently ripping off my efforts, without expending any kind of creative energy, i feel a little used.
i am at a critical point in my career, and i've put a lot of time, money, and effort into getting where i am, along with the help of a few good friends of mine who see promise in me and are actively working to help get my work out there. and i really don't need someone else capitalizing off of the success i've gotten so far. i don't need someone else coming up to me and asking about the images i had at so-and-so's, and then having to explain it's not mine.
perhaps it's a matter of perspective. perhaps the people who do it think i'll be flattered, or perhaps i won't notice, or maybe they don't even notice it themselves. maybe they're too wrapped up in their artistic tunnel vision to realize what they're doing. i don't know, and i'm not going to be so naive as to guess what they're thinking when they create it. at first, i tried to keep an open mind about it, and understand where they're coming from. i've been there, too. but when others come up to me and ask me about it, it gets me thinking. especially when they're more pissed about it than i am!
i suppose if you can take my ideas, style, marketing, and product, and be more successful than me at what i try to do, more power to you. it's a free country, and there's nothing wrong with competition. it means i'll have to work harder (which i don't mind doing). just don't do it if you want to stay my friend.
